5 of 7 · Ether / space (ākāśa)

विशुद्ध

Viśuddha

The centre of ākāśa — space itself, in which sound can exist at all. Purification here is understood as the removal of distortion.

Traditional location: The centre of the throat, at the hollow above the collarbones
Seed sound: हंHAM

In the body

Traditionally associated with the throat and everything that passes through it: speech, sound, and swallowed words.

In the heart and mind

Honesty, expression, and the courage to say the true thing. Tradition holds that unsaid words gather here.

How healers work with it

Chanting and sound practice, work with the seed sound, and sessions that rehearse difficult conversations aloud.

What this centre represents

Modern wellness interpretation

Gland: Associated in modern chakra literature with the thyroid
Body: Spoken of in relation to the throat, neck, jaw and voice
Tone: 741 Hz, used in contemporary sound practice

These correspondences are twentieth-century additions to the tradition, offered as reflection rather than as anatomy.

When it is over-expressed

Described as speech without listening: talking over, oversharing, using words as a way of not feeling.

When it is under-expressed

Described as swallowing — going quiet in conflict, agreeing outwardly, the sentence rehearsed and never said.

Working with this centre

What I have to say is allowed to take up space.

Breath

Ujjāyī — the soft ocean sound made at the back of the throat

Mudrā

Granthita mudrā — fingers interlaced, thumbs and index fingers touching, held at the throat

Āsana

Matsyāsana (Fish) · Sarvāṅgāsana (Shoulderstand) · Slow neck releases

Crystals & oils

Lapis lazuli · Aquamarine · Blue lace agate — Eucalyptus · Peppermint · Frankincense

The energy centres are a contemplative map from Indian tradition, not a medical description of the body. Practices here complement medical and mental-health care and never replace it.
