You get home from the wedding, or the office, or the hospital visit, and you are heavier than when you left. Not tired exactly. Heavy. You have not done anything strenuous. You just sat in a room with people, and something came back with you.
There is one cousin you can predict it from. Twenty minutes with her and you feel scraped out.
If you search for that feeling, you will be told to cleanse your aura. What follows is what that practice actually is, five ways to do it, an honest note on where the idea comes from, and a plain account of what it cannot do. If you want the short version: it is a ritual of transition, not a shield against life.
What aura cleansing actually is
Aura cleansing is a short ritual, using sweeping, smoke, water, sound or guided breath, that marks a clean boundary between what happened and what comes next. That is the whole of it.
It is not a shield, a cure, or a way to stop difficult people from affecting you. It changes how you meet what comes, not what comes.
It helps to know where the vocabulary comes from, because it is usually sold as ancient and it is not all ancient. The idea that a person is surrounded by a subtle field is old and appears in many traditions, including the Indian prana and kosha teachings. The version you will meet online, with a coloured field read for personality and cleared like a room, was largely assembled by Theosophical writers in the early 1900s, most famously Charles Leadbeater in Man Visible and Invisible in 1902, and then filled out by New Age writers from the 1970s. That does not make it worthless. It makes it modern, and worth treating as a modern practice rather than a sacred one.
One more honest line, stated once. No aura has been detected under test conditions, and no photograph of one exists. If that ends your interest, fair enough. If it does not, the practice still has something real in it, which is what the rest of this is about.
Why you feel heavy after being around certain people
The feeling is not imaginary, even if the explanation on offer is shaky.
Sitting with someone in distress is work. You track their face, soften your voice, hold back what you were about to say, manage the room. Some people do this constantly and without deciding to, and they pay for it in the evening. Emotions also move between people in ordinary, well-documented ways: we copy posture, breathing and tone without noticing.
None of that requires an energy field to explain. It does explain why a ritual at the end of the day helps. You have been on duty for hours. You need something that says the duty is over, and the mind takes an instruction from the body more readily than from a resolution.
If you recognise yourself as the person who absorbs everything in the room, the section on protecting your energy further down will be more use to you than any cleanse.
When people reach for a cleanse
These are the things people say when they book one. They are descriptions, not symptoms, and none of them is a diagnosis of anything.
- Heavy or flat after seeing a particular person, reliably enough to predict.
- Carrying the mood of a place long after leaving it.
- An ending that has not landed: the job finished, the relationship over, and you are still in it.
- Coming home from a hospital, a funeral or a courtroom.
- Feeling scattered, like your attention is in four rooms at once.
- Wanting to mark something. A new house, a new month, the day after a hard week.
If what you are describing is closer to weeks of low mood, no appetite, no sleep, or a fear that will not let go, that deserves a doctor or a therapist rather than a ritual. Say it out loud to someone this week.
How to cleanse your aura
Five methods, from the most searched to the most useful. Pick one. Doing one of these properly beats doing all five badly.
Salt
The most common method by a distance. A handful of rock salt or Epsom salt in a warm bath, fifteen minutes, phone in another room. No bath: a bucket, feet in, same fifteen minutes. Some people keep a small bowl of rock salt in a room and change it weekly.
What the salt is doing is giving the ritual a clear start and finish. That is not a small thing, and it is the honest description of it. Not on broken skin. If you have a heart condition, low blood pressure or you are pregnant, ask your doctor before long hot baths.
Smoke
In most Indian homes this is already happening. Loban or sambrani on charcoal, camphor lit in a small dish, dhoop or an incense stick carried around the room and around yourself, moving from the head down. White sage smudging is a North American Indigenous practice, imported recently through New Age bookshops and now sold everywhere, and white sage is over-harvested. If you want smoke, the loban in your own kitchen has the better claim and the smaller footprint.
Open a window. Smoke is smoke, and it is not good for asthma or for small children.
Water
The plainest version, and the one people actually keep. Wash your hands and face, or shower, with one deliberate intention: this is where the day comes off. Cold water at the end if you like it. Nothing else required.
Sweeping
The gesture a practitioner uses, done yourself. Stand, and with one open hand sweep about ten centimetres from your body, from the crown of your head down past your feet, as if brushing lint off a coat. Shoulders, arms, chest, back of the neck, down the legs. Flick your hands at the end, towards the floor or a window. Two minutes. It feels faintly ridiculous for the first twenty seconds and then it does not.
Breath and attention
The one with the most behind it. Sit down. Breathe out longer than you breathe in, for two minutes. Then name, silently, what you are carrying and whose it is. "That was her fear, not mine." "The meeting is over." Then one long breath out.
This is the part all the other methods are really doing. The salt and the smoke are scaffolding for it.
A five minute version you can do tonight
If you only have five minutes and you want something with a voice guiding it, do grounding in five minutes. It brings attention back to the body one sense at a time, and it is a better place to start than any ritual on a day when you feel panicky rather than heavy.
For heaviness in the chest specifically, grief, guardedness, the tightness that has been there for weeks, rest at the heart centre is eight minutes and gentler.
Both are free, need no equipment, and work at 11 pm.
Is aura cleansing the same as nazar utarna?
They are not the same practice, and the difference is worth knowing, because for most Indian readers nazar came first.
Nazar utarna is folk practice across South Asia. Salt, dried red chillies or a lemon are circled over the person and then burned or thrown away, or a black thread or kala tika is used on a child. The problem it addresses sits outside you: someone looked at you with envy, and the ritual undoes the look. It is family knowledge, passed down by grandmothers, and it carries real care.
Aura cleansing puts the problem inside your own field: you are carrying something, and you set it down. Different vocabulary, mostly borrowed from Theosophy and New Age writing rather than from Indian tradition.
Both are rituals of transition performed by someone who loves you or is paid by you, and both end with a clear marker that the thing is finished. Neither is a mechanism we can demonstrate. Plenty of families do both, and there is no need to choose.
Aura colours, and what they do not tell you
This is the most searched part of the subject and the part where the most is invented. So, plainly.
The system that assigns a personality to a colour, a blue aura for the calm communicator, a red one for the driven, is modern. It comes out of the Theosophical writing named above and was expanded by twentieth-century authors, each adding their own chart. The charts disagree with each other. There is no single tradition here to be faithful to, which is exactly why every page you read gives you slightly different meanings with equal confidence.
Where the colours do have older footing is the chakra map, which assigns a colour to each of the seven centres: deep red at the root, orange at the sacral, golden yellow at the solar plexus, emerald green at the heart, sky blue at the throat, indigo at the third eye, violet at the crown. That is a map of a felt life, not a diagnosis of you, and we have written the seven of them up in detail with their Sanskrit, their bija sounds and their traditional correspondences at the chakras. The honest framing is in chakras, a map not a diagnosis.
Can you find out your aura colour?
Not in the way the question hopes.
Aura cameras at wellness fairs and mall kiosks descend from a 1970s American invention built on biofeedback. You place a hand on a plate, it reads things like skin conductance and temperature, and software maps those numbers to colours. It is measuring your hand, not a field. Kirlian photography, from 1939, is a genuine and beautiful effect, but what it images is corona discharge in air around an object under high voltage, which is why a coin does it too.
If a colour arrives for you during a quiet practice, treat it as the mind offering you an image, the way a dream does. Sit with what it suggests. Do not build a decision on it, and do not let anyone charge you for a reading of your character based on a printout.
How to protect your energy without cleansing every day
If you are the person who comes home hollowed out after every gathering, cleansing afterwards is treating the symptom. What helps more is what happens during.
- Notice the handover. Most of the weight arrives at one specific moment, usually when someone starts telling you something heavy. You cannot stop caring. You can notice that it happened, which is most of the difference between carrying it and holding it.
- Breathe out longer than you breathe in, quietly, while they are still talking. Nobody can tell. It keeps your own body out of the story.
- Put your feet on the floor and feel them. A physical anchor during, not after.
- Have an exit time before you arrive. "I can stay until nine." Decided in advance, so you are not negotiating with yourself in the moment.
- Do not take on the fixing. Listening well is not the same as carrying it home and solving it. This is the hardest one and worth more than every ritual on this page.
- Then do your two minutes when you get home, so the day has an ending.
Worth saying: "empath" is a self-description, not a clinical category, and some people are sold a lot on the back of it. Being easily affected by other people is common, real, and not a special gift or a disorder. You do not need a label to want an evening that recovers you.
What aura cleansing cannot do
It cannot treat an illness. If a symptom is worrying you, that belongs to a doctor first. Aura cleansing sits alongside medical and mental-health care and never in place of it.
If a doctor used the word "aura" to you, this is a different thing entirely. In medicine, an aura is the set of sensory changes that can come before a migraine or a seizure: flickering in the vision, tingling, a strange smell, a feeling that something is about to happen. That is a neurological event and it needs a neurologist, not a ritual. If that is why you searched, please book the appointment.
It cannot make someone treat you well. No amount of clearing changes a person who drains you on purpose. That is a boundary problem, and sometimes a safety problem, and it is solved in conversation or in distance.
It cannot undo grief, and it is not meant to. A cleanse after a loss marks a passage. It does not shorten one.
It cannot be your only support if things are heavy. If you cannot sleep or eat, if the low mood has lasted weeks, or if you are thinking about harming yourself, please do not carry it alone. Tele-MANAS is free and available in many Indian languages on 14416. Our crisis resources are here, and you can write to us at support@healerji.com. Whatever today has been, you do not have to get through tonight on your own.
And plainly, because the market is full of it: nobody should tell you that your aura is damaged, blocked or attacked and that they alone can fix it for a fee. That is not a tradition, it is a sales technique. Walk away.
Where a healer fits, and where they do not
Everything above you can do alone, tonight, for free. Most people should start there.
A session is for the times when doing it alone is not working: when the ending will not land, when you have been the strong one for months, when you want twenty minutes where somebody else holds the structure and you do not have to decide anything. On HealerJi, aura cleansing is exactly that. Unhurried ritual, sweeping or smoke or sound or guided breath, mostly in silence, with the practice named honestly as a ritual of transition rather than a shield.
It is described that way on the page too, because every practice on this site has to say what it is not.
Sessions run over chat, audio or video, in the language you think in. For this, that matters more than it sounds. The vocabulary many Indian families actually use for this feeling is nazar, bhaari lagna, mann bhaari hai, and those words are easier to say in the language they were learned in than to translate for a stranger.
You can see what a session involves at aura cleansing, read the wider family of practices at energy healing, or start from the feeling instead at emotional wellbeing. Prices are set by each healer and shown before you pay.
A healer is a complement to medical and mental-health care. Never a replacement for either.
Nothing sticks to you permanently. But the evening needs a line drawn under it, and drawing one on purpose, with salt or smoke or two minutes of breath, is an honest place to begin.
